Can an earthquake cause anxiety and panic attack? Everything suddenly starts shaking, before you realize its an earthquake, you are buried under pile of rubble. If you are fortunate to be alive, you realize that you are trapped, imprisoned, even pinned down, confused, crying and thankful all at once.
Those were some of the experiences with the people of Haiti in the Caribbean where a devastating earthquake struck on Tuesday January 12, 2010. It measured 7.0 on the Richter scale which virtually decimated the entire country.
Since that massive earthquake in Haiti, there have been many smaller ones all around. Why is this happening? Is it normal or has the Haiti Earthquake triggered these other earthquakes?
Can we expect more earthquakes in the region in coming weeks/months and if so how large might they be? According to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre, the region will continue to generate earthquakes in the weeks and months to come as it has done in the past. Earthquakes in the 3.0-3.9 magnitude range, happen almost daily within the region.
Although there is no way to predict an earthquake, there are some proactive and preventative measures that can mitigate the extent of the emotional and personal damage. Here are some tips.
Before an Earthquake:
• Let you motto be "Be Prepared". If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
• Study the safe spots in the house that you can move to with closed eyes.
• Know the danger spots with hanging objects and unsecured furniture.
• Conduct drills so you and your family know safe locations in the home.
• Learn first aid cardiopulmonary resuscitation
During an earthquake:
• Do not to panic.
• If indoor, stay there and get to a safe place like under the table
• If outdoor, get in an open area away from trees, buildings or power lines.
• If driving, pull over to the side and stop.
• If in a crowded public place, do not rush to the door, crouch and cover your head with your hands.
After the Quake:
• Unless for an immediate, life-threatening emergency, do not use the telephone.
• Check for gas or water leaks, broken electrical wiring or sewage lines.
• Keep away from the streets, for emergency vehicles
• Be prepared for after-shocks, stay calm and lend a hand to others
Earthquakes can test the limits of fear simply because its dramatic entrance is unannounced. And other occasional tremors can trigger symptoms of severe panic attacks and anxiety.
The first time you experience a panic attack it can feel like your world is falling down around you. Nowhere feels safe as your anxiety becomes like a stalker lurking in the night to get you at any moment.
