When Three Become One: The Language in Group’s Approach to English Tuition

March 8, 2011

Last year three language schools in England and Ireland joined forces to become one group – the Language in Group. Today the three directors have identified three factors that they feel are critical to their continued success.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 8, 2011 --The three directors have over forty years of experience in providing English language tuition to international students. The directors today highlighted the three core areas that have contributed to each school’s past success and that are laying the foundations that will help the Group to achieve its stated aim – “To become the first name that people think of for quality and innovative language courses.”

The Annalivia School of Languages (Dublin), Camden College of English (London) and Totnes School of English (Devon) are managed by Kevin Kelly, Stuart Rubenstein and Margie Barker respectively. Reviewing the past achievement of their schools and identifying three core strengths of the Group the directors commented today that the Language in Group wanted to “take the stress out of language learning so that international students of English can enjoy the experience of living and learning abroad whilst making real progress with their English”.

The first core strength identified was the ability of the Group to meet the complex and varied needs of students through a range of courses that adopt a variety of approaches. The Group’s history of innovation to meet needs has already won one of its schools a British Council award for English teaching. This tradition of innovation is one which continues within the Language in Group. Alongside the traditional exam based courses (such as IELTS) the schools also have courses that cater specifically for mature students, families with young children, those seeking to gain work experience whilst learning English, those looking to combine a cultural tour with language learning and courses aimed at passing on best practice to teachers of English as a foreign languages.

The second core strength was pinpointed as a flexible timetable. The timetable whilst an administrative tool rather than pedagogical one can greatly influence to what extent a language school can meet different student’s demands for study. Some students seek more free-time to explore the area and culture around them, others are asking for more intensive courses. It is crucial that the timetable that is developed is flexible enough to cope with such conflicting demands. The timetable should enable student’s freedom rather than restrict their choice.

The third and final core strength the Group’s directors highlighted was small class sizes. Language in Group’s adult class size never exceeds 12 students. This means that students can always receive a lot of attention from teachers. The Language in Group also offers Mini Group teaching with just six students and even makes available one-on-one teaching.

The three core strengths of varied courses, flexible timetabling and small class sizes are not necessarily new to the three schools in the Language in Group. They are however central to how the directors see the Group achieving its aim of becoming “the first name that people think of for quality and innovative language courses.”
