Why Should Black History Month Be Celebrated

There are certain speeches that are timeless and some of them will always be as inspirational as they were when they were first said. One such speech to me is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech. Even when I hear it today I get Goosebumps, some people just have a gift, have a gift of saying things in a certain way, of moving the crowd and motivating them. Dr. Martin Luther King, was a part of the Civil Rights movement in 1960 and this was the movement, that turned out to be a turning point in the history of African –Americans, it is the movement that lead us to equality.
Dr Martin Luther King is the reason we celebrate Black History Month today, however there have been many other people that contributed to the movement. People like Reverend Joseph Lowery of Atlanta he was the co- founder of the monumental Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr. People like Ralph David Abernathy, Medgar Evers, Fred Shuttlesworth, and Bayard Rustin are the reason we have a solid foothold of African-Americans in the United States Of America.

So why do you think all of these people went through all of this trouble, well that is because they wanted us to live in peace, they wanted us to be happy and live a peaceful life. They wanted us to have everything that we deserve, they strived so that today we can live in equality. There are still many Americans that do not know what they did for us , what they deprived themselves of so that we can live in harmony today, this alone is one of the strongest reasons we need to celebrate Black History Month today.

The small little things that we do make a huge difference in our lives, a small action like voting and electing an African- American President for our country. This is not something huge, but it is huge towards the development of our country. So all its takes is a small action and we can make a huge difference to our society.
