The unleashing of publishing capabilities couldn’t have come at a more opportune time in the history of American Literature. Wiggles Press launched its first iTunes StoryChimes one year ago with hopes that electronic downloads would lead to increased awareness of the small publisher and translate into traditional print book sales. To date, there have been about 2,000 downloads of Wiggles Press Books around the globe – but not enough royalties to turn the venture into a lucrative deal at the close of 2011 – returns from sales were just enough to cover the investment in software.
The indicators have not determined whether downloading and promoting multicultural books in applications is the challenge or whether the economy has had the most impact on purchases. Nor can purchases of books in print be directly linked to downloads of electronic books.
“Determining whether significant electronic purchases by families of color have reached noticeable benchmarks when it comes to downloading literary applications or eBooks for that matter is still a statistic I would like to see increase measurably,” says Publisher Rochelle O’Neal Thorpe.
Sienna Entertainment 3rd Quarter 2011 report shows that the downloading of My Favorite Shoes, a freebee, has outperformed all the other offerings by 3 to 1 even though Wiggles Press StoryChimess are only priced at .99 cents per download.
Readers can find Wiggles Press books offered as StoryChimes in the Apple Apps Store by title and most eBook readers may think the books can be only be found in the Apple bookstore.
As a result, Wiggles Press is making an effort to increase sales by offering more books as eBooks for Kindle and Nook.
In addition, Wiggles Press has landed a new partner who will distribute books to the Apple iTunes as iBooks to increase accessibility.
The Publisher has set a goal of determining whether sales will indicate which book source is most popular among readers: iTunes, eBooks or iTunes Apps, Kindle or Nook.
Now that Kindle Fire is in color, Wiggles Press has increased its roll out of eBooks for Kindle or Nook this February 2012. These releases will enable more readers to have access to unique storybooks by new authors and artists.
