January 18, 2012: In a significant step to oppose the much debatable SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), the world’s largest encyclopedia has decided to go for a total blackout on Wednesday with its English website.
The declaration was made by Jimmy Wales, the Co-Founder of Wikipedia himself through a chain of tweets. In one of those tweets, Jimmy says, “This is going to be wow, I hope Wikipedia will melt phone systems in Washington on Wednesday. Tell everyone you know!”
The bill, along with its counterpart PIPA (Protect IP Act) proposed in the Senate, aims to target sites based in foreign countries that are involved in illegal sharing or download of digital content, primarily movies.Blackout SOPA
With this act, the US politicians are all set to take a stiff stand against the companies that indulge in copyright infringement.
Instead of directly targeting the concerned sites, it acquires even more harsher way to deal with them by slashing the sources of traffic and monetary gains from US.
Just to cite an example, if Google is asked to remove a particular site from its search engine, due to illegal broadcasting of a copyright digital content, payment gateways such as Paypal won’t be able to make any transactions to and from these companies.
In addition, the website would not get any ads from a US based client, which would indeed be a big financial threat to the said company.
To top it all, the internet users won’t be able to even visit these website, thereby leading to a heavy downfall in traffic.
Data sharing sites such as The Pirate Bay and TorrentHub are among the most probable ones to be affected by this act.
Alongside, social networking sites of the likes of Facebook and Twitter are also likely to feel the heat. As per the “anti-circumvention” clause in SOPA, distributing information across the internet about methods to get away with this act is equally criminal as infringing the law itself.
In short, beware if any of your Facebook status or tweets have the mention of Pirate Bay are consist of its link.
The site would be compelled to remove your content if its gets notice from the said authorities, and if they turn hostile, they better be ready to face the music, probably with a partial ban or a complete shutdown in the country.
