Women in technology to gather for computing conference

February 9, 2010

An annual 'unConference' of female technologists is due to take place in California this week.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 9, 2010 -- Female techies and other women in the IT sector are to gather in California for the third annual She's Geeky 'unConference' this week.

Women from a variety of IT businesses and non-profit organisations will meet at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View to discuss the key issues facing both the sector and their place in it.

The event is called an 'unConference' as the agenda is to be created in real-time by participants, supporting a peer-to-peer learning environment and allowing for dialogue between representatives of different technology sectors.

"In this women's only environment attendees have the opportunity to see their contribution to their field in a new light and gain confidence to step forward in their lives and careers," a representative of the organisers said.

Corporate sponsors for the event include such IT heads as Microsoft, TechnoGirlTalk, Adobe, BlogHer, Sarah Dopp Consulting and Spada Inc.

Other events in New York City, Washington DC, Minneapolis and up to three other venues are also being planned by the She's Geeky organisers, who hope to expand on their aims to "advance systemic change in tech culture by disseminating effective practices to address the challenges of women working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics".

"She's Geeky attracts women from a broad spectrum of technological specialties, diverse social groups, generations, and levels of expertise. The inclusive quality of She's Geeky events promotes discussion, furthers co-operation, and encourages learning," the organisers added.

The first ever She's Geeky conference was held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View in October 2007, with an aim to create an event that was different from all the other niche women-in-technology groups that operated within the Silicon Valley subset of businesses.

Instead, they aimed to promote links between women in different IT fields by opening up the agenda to a dialogue-centred format, allowing for the open discussion of theories and ideas.

Approximately 200 women in a variety of fields, including systems development, software engineering, IT sales and new media are expected to attend the unConference.

Earlier this month, the technology sector hosted one of its largest annual events in Las Vegas.

The 2010 Consumer Electronics Show showcased the latest gadgets and innovations for the coming year.

However, many female technology analysts noted that women's place at the event highlighted the inherent discrimination of the IT industry, with many women in PR or technology hired as 'booth babes' to work on companies' stalls.
