The other day, I was listening to a young man who was pitching some type of MLM business to a newcomer - and as I was listening I almost wanted to chime in because the young man was having a little bit of a problem with a few of the questions and the rhetorical critiques, your basic defensive hostility of one of the folks he was presenting to.
You see it was a man and his wife, and another lady, I am guessing a friend. The friend was a complete critic of MLM and really giving the young man a challenge and a run for his money. He was indeed holding his own but making no headway in defending the business model.
So, is MLM or multi-level marketing really dumb? It depends if you understand the business model or not. You see, dumb or D-U-M could just stand for "Don't Understand Model" and if you don't get it, or see the synergies or strategy of it all, then it might very well appear dumb to you. But perhaps you might like to hear some of my philosophy on this for a moment?
First, I am a retired franchisor, yes, I founded a franchise company. The concept of franchising and MLM are not all that far apart. Consider if you will the old axiom; "It's better to make 1% of a 100 people's work, than 100% of one person's work." - quick who said that? Well, if you don't know, then you should look it up and think on it, because those words of wisdom definitely came from someone who knew what they were talking about, and thus, I suppose you can take that quote to the bank.
Now then, it took me 20-years to perfect my business model before I could franchise it, and sell that model to others, but once I did, it was amazing how fast it grew. In a multi-level business you take a proven business model with product, or service, and you are also selling it as a business to others. In essence someone else creates the business model, and you get to sell it just as a franchisor does, without the 20-year school of hard knocks to perfect it all.
In franchising, they have something similar - it's called a Master Franchise. But even to become a master franchise you have to pay some heft upfront fees to the original franchisor, generally $100s of thousands of dollars and only then in a specific defined territory. So it's not all a bed of roses.
So, you see, the concept of MLM is not dumb at all, it's quite brilliant actually. Of course, it only works if you work the plan and follow the program. You must be dedicated, and in it to win it. Now tell me, does anything I've said here sound dumb to you? Well, only if you didn't understand what I just said. Please consider all this.
