"It's the craziest thing I've ever seen," replies one bystander. "It's like one giant flea market. Fleas everywhere must be shaking in their boots".
Michael Edwin Rush, truck driver from Ardmore, TN, driving from Frankfort, KY to Glascow, KY, noticed yard sale signs at every little community he passed through. There were yard sales at churches, in parking lots, in yards, in open and closed down businesses, and anywhere a yard sale could be set up. Traffic was crazy with people coming and going from one yard sale to the next, in a hurry to beat someone out of the next great deal. "I had to take extra care to slow down and avoid the 'crazy' drivers," exclaimed Michael.
The Worlds Longest Yard Sale seems to be a trend throughout America that when we get tired of our stuff, we sell it to other people who are tired of their stuff who sell their stuff to us. For as we all know here in America, it's all about stuff. Even while the economy is in a turmoil, and people are losing jobs left and right, still we can't seem to satisfy our addiction for more stuff.
No taxes are being raised by all this buying and selling, therefore these sales have no impact on our economy whatsoever. It seems amazing to me that county and state governments haven't jumped on the tax bandwagon and decreed a yard sale tax to take advantage of all the lost revenue, especially now, when county and state governments are struggling to pay their bills. However, this tax free trading is a boon to consumers who are out to find a bargain.
I guess the American dream is really about having the right stuff; if you have it you can sell it, if you want it you can buy it. This is why people all around the world love and hate us depending on their economic status. So if you feel a need to quench your desire for new and different things, check out the World's Longest Yard Sale and enjoy the panoramic scenery along the way.
