May 28, 2003 (Press Release) --
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Jack Casady will release his first ever solo CD Dream Factor on Eagle Records June 17, 2003. A Founding member of the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, Jack Casady’s innovative style has defined the role of bass guitar in Rock and Roll for close to four decades. Liberating the bass from its traditional role as part of the rhythm section, Jack’s pioneering approach has brought the instrument to the forefront. With sweeping chords and stormy melodic lines Jack’s bass distinguished not only Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna but also a variety of side projects and recordings with artists including Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills and Nash, Warren Zevon, Country Joe and The Fish, Rusted Root and Gov’t Mule.
Now for the first time, Casady will release his own solo CD. As much a departure from Hot Tuna as that band had been from Jefferson Airplane, the record features eleven brand new songs and an all star cast of musicians. Joined by Paul Barrere, Ivan Neville, Jorma Kaukonen, Warren Haynes, Jeff Pehrson and Jim Bruenberg of Box Set, Fee Waybill and Doyle Bramhall II among others, Jack showcases his signature sound in an variety of settings. “This was a great opportunity to do a lot of different things and use a lot of different approaches within one album,” says Casady. “I got a chance to take some higher intensity solos on ‘Outside,’ ‘Who You Are,’ and ‘Sweden,’ and at the same time I was able to call on some earlier influences for the soul and folk oriented material.”
Recorded over several weeks at Casady’s own studio with a core band including Steffan Presley on Organ, Steve Fister on guitars and Matt Abts (Gov’t Mule) and Steve Gorman (Black Crows) sharing duty on the drums, Dream Factor is the result of years of performing and songwriting. “I’ve always wanted to do this album,” says Casady “It was wonderful to have the opportunity to mix it up with different musicians and different styles.”
Little Feat’s Paul Barrere brings his soaring slide guitar to the rocker “Paradise” and returns for the rousing “Listen To The Wind” backed by Box Set’s beautiful harmony support. Jeff Pehrson takes the lead on the country flavored “Water From A Stone,” and Jim Bruenberg pairs his vocals with Jack’s rolling bass on the reflective ballad “By Your Side.” Sweden features singer Fee Waybill of The Tubes and ends with a dizzying guitar battle between Airplane/Tuna running mate Jorma Kaukonen and Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes. Ivan Neville shines on the slow burning “Trust Somebody” and joins his funky growl with Doyle Bramhall’s driving guitar on “Daddy’s Little Girl.”
Dream Factor opens the next chapter in Jack Casady's ever evolving career.
