August 8, 2003 (Press Release) --
Camden, NJ (service) August 8, 2003 - VIR Technologies, Inc. (VIR) today announces they have developed chemistry independent battery management methods that simplify designs in wireless, handheld, mobile, and battery powered electronics. Focused on enhancing battery management accuracy and extending battery life, these Intuitive Power Management (IPM) TM solutions recognize batteries as "chemical components" in electrical designs, and thereby optimize system level power management as the battery powered products are used. IPM technology enables system designers to easily and cost-effectively design-in VIR's solutions, and offer their customers a wide variety of choices for portable power (batteries, fuel cell, solar, USB, etc.) without hardware changes.
The insatiable demand for battery powered portable products including wireless phones, notebook PCs, digital cameras, MP3 players and PDA's continues to highlight the key goal of extended battery life. The availability of IPM software will enable designers to beat the time-to-market requirements and to reduce development costs of contemporary battery-powered electronics.
With the software based IPM solution, battery powered products can now rely on an extended and efficient supply of energy from the power source. As the device is used and different power sources are attached to the device, the battery management drivers can be updated to make optimum use of available power. This allows OEM's to offer cost-reduced and performance-enhanced products for the world markets.
These IPM solutions acknowledge differences in battery chemistry, determine the "state-of-energy" of the battery or power source, and provide feedback to the system so that the system can minimize power consumption. VIR software engineers have developed code that is easily portable to phones, chargers, or wireless service providers. System designers can implement the core IPM technologies in only 64 bytes of RAM, 2K bytes of ROM and use only 0.003% of a processor's available CPU cycles in a typical wireless phone design. The IPM software is available now for all 32-bit, 16-bit and 8-bit processors for mobile products. Source code for the core product, "battery chemistry acknowledgement", is available for $249.00 (includes a restricted lifetime license). Development kits are also available.
