August 25, 2003 (Press Release) --
In 1853, Elisha Graves Otis introduced the world's first safety elevator in Yonkers, New York -changing the shape of the modern world. From that point forward, buildings could rise beyond the limitations of stairs. Today, Otis Elevator Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, is the world's largest manufacturer, installer, and servicer of elevators, escalators, moving walkways and other horizontal transportation systems. For architects and contractors, developers and homeowners, Otis is the world's leading people mover.
When Otis began to migrate from an expansive SNA network to a consolidated IP environment, they began to replace multiple terminal emulation products, including IBM Personal Communications/3270, PACKET PC and Attachmate EXTRA!, with Zephyr's IP-based PASSPORT terminal emulation software. When the organization desired to once again undergo a transition, this time migrating a core application developed using Software AG's Natural from an S/390 mainframe to a Unix platform, they wanted to continue using PASSPORT for host access. With little effort, Otis was able to switch users from TN3270 client to the VT client by simply reconfiguring the PASSPORT terminal emulation software. Otis continues to use both PASSPORT TN3270 and VT terminal emulation.
In terms of VT emulation requirements, Otis needed the same text attributes available with an IBM 3270 terminal. As such, VT340 graphic text color commands were a mandatory requirement. These advanced text color attributes are defined in the ISO 6429 standard and are not implemented in most VT terminal emulation products. These VT340 text attributes included 8- color support for text display, normal and bold display modes, underline, reverse video, and blinking.
Another VT emulation requirement included the use VT user defined keys and the ability to customize the keyboard layout. Otis needed to re-map and customize the top row of function keys (F1-F12) to get the PF1 through PF24 functionality needed for use with Natural. In other words, the IBM 3270 PF keys were simulated using the PASSPORT VT terminal emulator.
After working collaboratively with consultants and Otis, the transition from the S/390 mainframe to the Unix host system was successfully accomplished in less than a month.

Key Benefits:
* Using the same PASSPORT terminal emulator to access the new Unix host that was used to access the S/390 mainframe
* No re-training for end-users
