August 28, 2003 (Press Release) --
Seventeen of the country’s most promising female musicians will come together at Radio Cafe (1313 Woodland St., Nashville) on Friday, September 12 from 5 to 9:30 pm for an unforgettable evening of music. This event, showcasing members of the Indiegrrl organization, will coincide with the 3rd annual Nashville New Music Conference (September 10-13). The showcase is free and open to the public.
“There’s so much talent and energy in this group,” says Chicago songwriter Shelley Miller, who is coordinating the showcase with the help of Nashville artist Julie Grower. “In an age when hype and gimmicks seem to dominate the music industry, these women deliver with real songs, real instruments and real talent.”
Among the artists scheduled to appear are award-winning songwriter Rachel Sage, a finalist in this year’s Adam and Eve Newport Folk Festival Talent Search, and Nashville artists Grower, Heidi Schwab, Lynette Vantreese and Diane Falcone. Other artists on the roster are Miller, Leslie Berry (Greenville, SC), Blaqlily (Indianapolis, IN), Beth Boucher (Boston, MA), Jen Cass (Detroit, MI), Ellis (Minneapolis, MN), Ashleigh Flynn (Portland, OR), Maery Lanahan (Dayton, OH), Michelle Lewis (Boston, MA), Heidi Millington (Atlanta, GA), Ann O'Brien (Austin, TX) and Christina Ward (Philadelphia, PA).
Indiegrrl was founded by Seattle musician Holly Figueroa in May of 1998 as a forum for information, networking, and conversation about independent music from a female perspective. Currently Indiegrrl has over 1300 members
internationally, making Indiegrrl the largest organization of its kind in the world. Indiegrrl welcomes female DJs, managers, booking agents, and performers
of all genres, as well as men interested in women’s role in the independent music industry.
“Think of it as one part summer camp, one part resource center and two or three parts indie music tent revival,” Miller says of the Indiegrrl on-line community. “We’re such a tight-knit group, even though many of us have never met each other.”
