(September 24, 2003) Amazon.com, the global leader in e-commerce, indicates that New York Times bestseller "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kid and "My Fractured Life" by Rikki Lee Travolta are swelling in popularity among the same audience of purchasers.
Amazon.com has more than 30 million customers around the world. In a CBS.MarketWatch.com report, Amazon.com's traffic in the month of August was 35.4 million.
Amazon.com offers both "The Secret Life of Bees" and "My Fractured Life" to international audiences through www.Amazon.com (U.S.A), www.Amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom), www.Amazom.de (Germany), www.Amazon.fr (France), www.Amazon.co.jp (Japan), and www.Amazon.ca (Canada).
As noted in Library Journal, Kid's "The Secret Life of Bees" tells the story of a 14-year old white girl raised by an elderly African American after witnessing the tragic death of her mother. Travolta's "My Fractured Life" is a behind-the-scenes novelization of the sorrows actors face in pursuit of fame, and the addictions they face after they find success.
According to Bob Strauss, portfolio manager at the Icon Information Technology fund, at current prices, investors are anticipating that Amazon will grow its earnings by 45 percent annually for the next five years.
Online commerce sales year-to-date are up 17 percent to $30 billion. This compares to the 28 percent growth in online commerce during the same period last year and incorporates the figures of Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobel, Books-A-Million, and the U.K.'s Blackwells Bookstore.
Figures from Barnes & Nobel show Travolta's "My Fractured Life" moved up over 177,000 spots in its sales rankings between the week of September 8 and the week of September 15, 2003. Kid's book is currently ranked number 23 in sales by the retailer.
Barnes & Nobel reports that "My Fractured Life" continues to share popularity among buyers with its number six ranked seller "Bleachers" by John Grisham, "Benjamin Franklin: An American Life" by Walter Isaacson (# 35), and "Living History" by Hillary Clinton (# 296).
