September 27, 2003 (Press Release) --
Artists and youth -just keeping it real. Announcing the arrival of the Storytellers Inc.’s full color book, Your Name Ain’t on the List , written by 14 teenage youth and local artists. Editor and V.P. of Human Services, Michele Bridges is thrilled to see this project come to fruition, “Our goal was to create an art work that accurately expresses the hopes and fears of youth living at –risk in urban areas of our community, thereby opening communication for new approaches in positive youth development. “
Thomas W. Stibal , Executive Director of the Kansas City Housing Authority (KCKHA) comments, “The book's theme, storyline and illustrations represent a labor of love of fourteen young authors and their mentors over the summer of 1999. Both the storyline and illustrations are skillfully intertwined to provide the reader with a realistic, poignant and insightful depiction of what life must have been for disadvantaged inner-city youth left out of the mainstream culture. The fourteen young authors are to be praised for their teamwork and creativity. We also commend Storytellers, Inc. staff for bringing to fruition a difficult and valued work of art and for which we are all very proud. We believe this book is a "must read", especially for schoolteachers, social workers and others in public service. We hope that through the collaborative efforts of our schools, families, social service agencies and area churches the lives and welfare of young persons evidenced in this work have improved over the past four years.”
Funding for the production of this project was provided by KCKHA and printed by Doug Young of Clear Impressions. A sample of the book can be viewed on our website at www.storytellersinc.org/book.htm . Your Name Ain’t on the List can be purchased for $9.95 by emailing bridges@storytellersinc.org or calling (816) 304-7380.
