Aloe Vera is growing in popularity in the UK because of its medicinal and cosmetic uses. However, it has been used as a medicinal plant for over 6000 years. The Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Persians, Indians and Chinese all used it for its curative and beautifying properties, see Aloe History for more information on its traditional uses.
"Four vegetables are indispensable for the well-being of man: Wheat, the Grape, the Olive and the Aloe. The first nourishes him, the second raises his spirit, the third brings him harmony and the fourth cures him." - Christopher Columbus.
Only in recent years has it been possible to treat Aloe Vera so it can be safely stored and transported around the world without losing its potency. Many experts over the years have studied the plant, and many more people have used it to help their ailments. It has probably been studied and tested more than most modern synthetic drugs - and certainly used by many more people over the 6000 years since it was first discovered. All users and testers agree that it is safe, non-toxic and has no adverse side-effects.
"I believe that Aloe Vera fits very nicely into the management of several conditions, because it is so safe and non-toxic and it often works where conventional medicine has not worked." - Dr Peter Atherton.
Although it looks like a cactus, Aloe Vera is actually a member of the lily family, which includes Onions, Garlic and Asparagus. Of the over 200 Aloe varieties, the Aloe Barbadensis Miller is the one known as True Aloe (Aloe Vera), and it is this plant that is the most potent.
"You ask me what were the secret forces which sustained me during the long fasts. Well, it was my unshakeable faith in God, my simple and frugal life style and the Aloe whose benefits I discovered upon my arrival in South Africa at the end of the Nineteenth Century." - Mahatma Gandhi
The claims for the beneficial effects of Aloe Vera are many and varied. When people first hear about Aloe Vera's properties it's very hard for them to believe their ears. How can a plant have such a powerful effect on so many (apparently) varied conditions? To find out see: How does it Work? and How to Use Aloe Vera.
"Aloe actually accelerates fibroblast development, which is necessary for collagen repair and wrinkle prevention. But recent research shows that this ancient remedy does much more..." - Patrick Holford, Institute for Optimum Nutrition
