Colorado Peace groups rally against Donald Rumsfeld's policies and attempts to control NATO
Colorado Springs- 7 October- Colorado Springs peace groups will rally from noon until 6 PM, along Lake Avenue, in Colorado Springs, to greet Donald Rumsfeld and NATO delegates as they arrive at the Broadmoor Hotel for their 2-day ministerial conference.
This peaceful and lawful demonstration was organized to show the international community that there is American opposition to the Bush/Rumsfeld policy in Iraq and the middle east, the U.S. attempts to dominate world bodies, like the UN and NATO, and to pressure other countries into compliance.
The protest is against the coercion of NATO members by the U.S., the obsolete mission of NATO since the fall of the USSR, the U.S. resistance to the UN as the premier world body for conflict resolution, NATO expansion outside it's original sphere of influence, and NATO's use of warfare as it's primary tool in international conflicts.
Jeremy Bendik-Keymer, assistant professor of Philosophy at Colorado College, and a member of the Colorado College Peace Project, said, "The present Bush administration has eroded our American commitment to fair international democracy where every country has a say within what is permitted by human rights."
The Czech Republic had to buy $500 million in arms from the US in order to modernize it's military before NATO membership. US arms dealers Lockheed/Martin and Boeing spent $151 million in lobbying congress to sell more F-16’s and F-18’s to NATO members, and before the last expansion US arms dealers spent an additional $32.3 million in donations to congressional candidates. Congress appropriated $30 million in military aid and $647 million in loan guarantees, through the “Central European Defense Loan Fund” for the new NATO members to buy US arms. President of the “US committee to Expand NATO”, Bruce Jackson, was also the director of Lockheed/Martin.
Dorothy Schlaeger, of the Pike's Peak Justice and Peace Commission said, "We also question NATO's continued existence after the downfall of the USSR, and oppose the military strategies on which NATO relies." "We can't use violent means to rid the world of terrorism."
The organizers are requesting that all participants honor the lawful and peaceful nature of the rally in word and deed; stay out of the street, and avoid confrontation with security forces present.
