Los Angeles, October 3, 2003 - ScreamFest announced today that its 2003 festival will kick off on October 10th with a special screening of SPIDERMAN and ARMY OF DARKNESS and will feature a Q&A with Director Sam Raimi at 7:00 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The festival, which is in its third year, will run from October 10th -19th, and will include new independent horror features, shorts, student films, animated films, special screenings and seminars. The nine day event will be held at three theatres including: the Fairfax Laemmle Theatre at 7907 Beverly Blvd., the theatre at the LA Film School at 6363 Sunset Blvd. and the Arclight at 6360 Sunset Blvd. The closing night celebration dinner of the festival on October 19th, will be held at Maggianos at the Grove, where Wes Craven will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the genre.
Festival founder Rachel Belofsky said, “We are thrilled to celebrate the work of independent filmmakers who will be the cinematic stars of tomorrow; as we support the fine work of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (visit www.cff.org) whose mission is to “add tomorrow’s everyday.” Belosky is thrilled that the majority of last year's films now have distribution with companies that champion independent filmmakers such as Lions Gate and Blockbuster. The festival prides itself on selecting quality films from emerging producers and directors.
The list of feature films in competition include several premiere screenings such as the Los Angeles premiere of NIGHSTALKER (2003 Sundance Official Selection), directed by Chris Fisher. The film follows serial killer Richard Ramirez on his satanic, drug-fueled, killing spree throughout Los Angeles in 1984. Also premiering in Los Angeles, are MALEVOLENCE (2003 winner at the Long Island Film Festival) directed by Steven Mena, the Chilean vampire movie SANGRE ETERNA, and the Korean horror film A TALE OF TWO SISTERS (Dreamworks recently bought the English language remake rights for this film.)
Official selections also include: THE WISHER directed by Galvin Wilding and featuring Ron Silver, and Japanese horror film THE GHOST SYSTEM directed by Toshikazu Nagae.
Each film, will challenge other films in its category, while being eligible for awards such as best Editing, Cinematography, Special Effects, Make-Up and "Best Picture. Individual awards will include Best Actor, Actress, and Director.
The seminar line-up is sure to attract enthusiastic crowds. “Robert McKee’s Horror Day” will be a full day dedicated to the art of horror filmmaking/writing. “Blood and Guts 101” will feature a Q&A with Gary Tunnicliffe, (Hellraiser: Bloodline, Dracula II: Ascension and Dracula III: Legacy) who will offer a loose and humorous explanation of the world of special makeup effects. There will also be a Q&A with JT Petty (Mimic 3) and Patrick Lussier (Dracula II: Ascension and Dracula III: Legacy.)
A prestigious array of film business professionals including Jeff Katz of New Line Cinema, Award-winning Producer Stan Winston and Michael Grady of Dimension Films are set as judges. Prizes include Budgeting Software from Entertainment Partners and 13 cans of 400 feet 16mm Fuji Film, and sets of Hollywood Creative Directories from IFILM. The festival will also be reviewing screenplays. Winners will receive the "Movie Magic Screenwriter Award" a cash award of $1,000 and winning short screenplay receives complimentary registration to the Robert McKee Story Structure seminar, a $495 value. Judging the screenplay competition are producer Sean Cunningham (Friday the 13th, Freddy vs Jason), screenwriter Joseph Stefano (PSYCHO), Foursight Entertainment's Jeremy Bell FourSight.com and Michael Grady of Dimension Films.
Screamfest will also feature non-competition screenings of Dimension Films' MIMIC 3: SENTINEL directed by JT Petty (SOFT FOR DIGGING) and DRACULA II: ASCENSION and DRACULA III: LEGACY directed by Patrick Lussier (DRACULA 2000). Also, there will be special screenings of WRONG TURN including a Q & A with Stan Winston, and SCREAM featuring a Q & A with Wes Craven, Hong Kong's THE EYE (Cruise/Wagner Productions and Paramount Pictures recently bought the English language remake rights for this film) and the cult favorite AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON.
ScreamFest is open to the general public and tickets are available by calling (323) 656-4-SCREAM or for purchase at the box office on opening night. Tickets and festival passes are also available by visiting the website www.screamfestla.com. Tickets for individual films are $10.00 while a ScreamFest pass is $200.00. Full Festival passes include all screenings, after parties, seminars and the closing dinner awards ceremony. An opening night ticket is $35.00.
