HIGH PRIESTESS OF POETRY ABENA DISROE TO REPRESENT WASHINGTON DC AT 3rd ANNUAL SPOKEN WORD EXPO
WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 20, 2003 – Abena Disroe, the High Priestess of Poetry, Educator, Community Activist, Author, Public Speaker and director/founder of The Poets Den has been selected to represent Washington, DC in the feature showcase, hosted by Shang of BET, at the 3rd Annual Spoken Word Expo “VIBES OF SOUL,” sponsored by UPN which will be held in St. Louis, Missouri at the Ambassador, 114 Northland Shopping Center from November 6-8, 2003.
Sixteen other poets from around the USA have also been selected to represent their respective cities as well, but only ten will ultimately be selected. Abena Disroe who hosted the opening show of the 2nd Annual Spoken Word Expo has been writing and performing poetry since 1995, In 1999 Ms. Disroe founded, “The Poets Den” an open-mic poetry event www.thepoetsden.com, which she produces and hosts every Thursday at the Caribbean Restaurant, Euphoria, the event as featured spoken word artiste such as; Rebecca “Butterfly” Vaughns, Jeffrey G. Duarte, Queen Sheba, Monte Smith, Tru-Life, Jean-Claude Toran, Triple Blak and Reese amongst others.
Abena Disroe’s performing group “Voices with Vision” has earned a nomination for the Mayor's Arts Award for New and Outstanding Emerging Artist. She was also selected as an “Outstanding Young Women of America” by Advisory Boards of the, Daughters of the American Revolution, National Council of Negro Women, General Federation of Women's Club, Mellon Bank, and Soroptimist International; for her community projects, and spirit of empowerment not only in her community, but communities throughout Washington, DC.
Earlier this year Abena Disroe opened for Jazz Legend Angela Bofill at all four of her shows. She has also performed at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York, National Theater in Washington, DC, Source Theater in Washington, DC, Haiti International Radio in Port Au Prince, Haiti, MHZ2 Cable Networks with Patti Austin, Daveed Nelson of “The Last Poets,” Robert Northern (Brother AH who has played with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sun RA,) and Natambu Elijah Russ who has played with the Temptations, and Billy Nicolas, Red Foxx, and Four Tops, as well as other excellent performers and venues nationally and internationally.
A certified poetry therapist Ms. Disroe conducts workshops at the SITAR School of the Arts, and at Senior Citizens Wellness Centers, as well as visiting seventeen schools each year to increase the interest, and thirst for reading in the youth. She currently works with Cancer patients at Howard University Hospital.
