Professional Education Corporation is please to announce that Denver School of Nursing, a division of PEC, was granted provisional approval, effective today, to operate as a postsecondary educational institution in Colorado. Approval was granted by the Colorado Department of Higher Education, Division of Private Occupational School Board. Included in the approval to operate was the approval of a Nursing Refresher Program. The Nursing Refresher Program has been designed to assist both Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses, who have been professionally inactive to update their nursing practice skills and capabilities to facilitate their return to practice in the Colorado health care system in acute care, clinic or long-term care facilities. It is anticipated that initial classes may be held as early as November 2003, at the Denver School of Nursing location at 1401 19th Street in the “Lodo” area of downtown Denver.
Currently, Colorado is experiencing a 13% shortage of nurses statewide. It is projected that the nursing shortage in Colorado could increase to as much as 31% by 2008. The Denver School of Nursing has been founded to provide additional resources to help address this healthcare personnel shortage issue. In addition to the Nursing Refresher Program, the Denver School of Nursing is presently developing curriculum for a nursing aide program, a practical nursing program and, subsequently a registered nursing program.
Ms. Jeannette Blair is President-CEO of Denver School of Nursing. Previously, Ms. Blair was the owner of Denver Paralegal Institute, a nationally recognized and accredited institution in paralegal education. Additionally, Ms. Blair is pleased to announce the appointment of two key staff people to the team at Denver School of Nursing.
Mr. Michael Schledorn was brought on board as the Chief Operating Officer of Professional Education Corporation, (PEC) the umbrella company for the Denver School of Nursing. Mr. Schledorn brings more than eighteen years of Private School Management experience as well as an MA in Education from Texas Christian University. Ms. Blair states, “Michael is a multi-talented and very experienced professional whose many skills will assure the success of our educational programs.”
Most importantly for the Denver School of Nursing, Dr. Gail Armstrong, RN, ND, has accepted the position as the institution’s Director of Nursing Education effective January 5, 2004. Dr. Armstrong earned her Nursing Doctorate at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1995, and has been an Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing at UCHSC since 2000. “We are extremely excited that Dr. Armstrong will be leading the academic development and mission of the Denver School of Nursing. The appointment of Dr. Armstrong underscores the institution’s commitment to the principle of excellence in every aspect of the institution,” says Ms.Blair.
