WISCONSIN (November 14, 2003) Hollywood, California and the bright lights of Broadway's 42nd Street – those are the types of places we expect the top selling biographies of entertainers to originate from….but, Wisconsin?
"My Fractured Life" by Southern Wisconsin resident Rikki Lee Travolta has climbed into the Top 25 Featured Entertainment Biographies as ranked in consumer popularity by e-commerce retailer Amazon.com.
Figures published by Amazon.com as of November 14, 2003 show growth of over 900,200 positions in its official sales rank by Travolta's "My Fractured Life" from the month of September.
Travolta relocated to Wisconsin last year, having summered in the dairy state during his childhood.
"My step-father's parents lived here. I spent the summers with them working on a farm. It helped me build character," says Travolta.
The childhood experiences working his relative's farm stuck with the boy who would grow up to be a star. He credits the experience with keeping him grounded throughout his career with Ron Howard, Jenna Elfman, Elizabeth Hurley, and Woody Harrelson.
"I've lived in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and have appeared around the world as an actor, but I wanted somewhere real to call home," explains Travolta of his decision to settle in Kenosha. He also spent the summer teaching English in Racine at Horlick High School in an effort to give back to the community.
Travolta's novel, "My Fractured Life," details the world of has-been and never-were actors struggling for survival in the underbelly of Hollywood. The actor has defined the title groom's role in "Tony n' Tina's Wedding" in cities around the world, making it the longest running stage comedy in history.
"Travolta has a great way of looking at Hollywood and the lifestyle of show business," says The Spokane Spokesman Review in its Book Club recommendation.
Sharing the upper echelon on the Biography sales charts are "Kate Remembered" by A. Scott Berg about the life of Katharine Hepburn, "Paige by Paige: A Year on Trading Spaces" by television host Paige Davis, and "Journals" by late Seattle rocker Kurt Cobain
During the month of October Amazon.com had to replenish its inventory of the Travolta book eight times due to escalating sales.
"This was another great quarter for Amazon.com," said Tom Szkutak, Amazon.com's chief financial officer.
In 2003 Travolta became the first member of his family to star in the role of Danny Zuko in "Grease" in over 25 years when the actor agreed to appear in four charity performances to raise money for underprivileged youths.
Early this month, Travolta appeared for pictures with Fabio for the launch of the romance model's women's clothing line at Sam's Club, and appeared in spokesperson capacity at Carson Pirie Scott. Travolta downplays his celebrity with Midwest humility.
"I'm a meat and potatoes guys. I ride a motorcycle. I drink beer," says Travolta. "I chose Wisconsin as a home for a reason. Just as much, Wisconsin chose me. I'm home."
"My Fractured Life" is currently available at 20% off the normal retail price at Amazon.com. Customers may also order through Barnes & Nobel's Internet portal barnesandnobel.com for delivery or in-store pickup.
