January 20, 2004 (Press Release) --
Campaign asks America to ‘bless’ God
A Michigan pastor is hoping to put a new twist on the familiar “God bless America” slogan.
He’s started a national campaign to make “Bless God America” the new buzz-phrase, and, as he says, to put America’s hearts and minds back on thanking God for the blessings He’s given.
"Since America came under attack on September 11, 2001, the show of patriotism and loyalty to the flag has been monumental," says Pastor Keith Newland of East Tawas Baptist Church in northeast Michigan. "The greatest outward sign of this is the 'God Bless America' slogan on signs everywhere."
Newland says he wants to use the campaign to help people focus back on God, rather than on the problems in the nation or in their own lives.
"God has blessed America," he says. "God has blessed this nation above all that our founding fathers could have ever hoped or dreamed. It is time that America returned to its roots. It is time that we, as one nation under God, come together in unity to bless God."
The Bless God America campaign officially launched on September 11, 2003, on the second anniversary of the event that inspired it. Along with the website, www.blessgodamerica.org, Newland and his crew offer T-shirts bearing the slogan, plus a Sunday-night hymn sing at his church that reinforces the idea.
He says he’s hoping the Sunday-night hymn sing, which is casual and multidenominational, will expand in concept to other parts of the country.
He also has his eye on the national, yearly March for Jesus event, which recently became decentralized. He’s working on a way to parlay his T-shirt sales into fundraising for that event, as well.

The Bless God America campaign is also featured in the December 2003 issue of the Baptist Beacon:
