Multi-application PoS terminals: Turning an expense into revenue
Florida-based AMERIPOS Inc. is looking for partner to develop Multi-Application POS terminals based on Linux or Windows Enbedded programmming.
Point-of-sale (POS) equipment has evolved to include transactions beyond just credit card payments which in turn has opened up a number of possibilities to retailers -- ones that generate revenue.
It is not unusual for customers to pay their telephone account or purchase airtime for their cellular phone while paying for groceries at the local supermarket, in the same way they would pay with their credit card.
This service provides convenience to the consumer and a way for the retailer to recoup the cost of the rental for the PoS equipment.
To offer credit card transactions through a POS terminal, a merchant has to pay a monthly fee for the rental of the equipment and the normal acquiring fee of the value of the transaction. These fees are necessary since financial institutions need to recover the cost of the infrastructure and terminals. This becomes costly and some smaller merchants pass the transaction fee on to the customer to recoup some of the cost.
Banking institutions have addressed this problem by providing the opportunity for selling additional services.
Many other businesses have leveraged this technology to incorporate third-party account payments and even e-mail facilities, all available through one terminal.
The advantage that these additional AMERIPOS services provide is the opportunity to cover the cost of the PoS terminal and still generate revenue through additional services. Businesses that offer account payment services and value-added services through multi-application terminals are now paying the merchant or retailer a fee per transaction, turning what was a cost to the merchant into a revenue-generating opportunity.
There are many opportunities in this relatively untapped market and further developments may
include ticketing. Many of the PoS terminals feature smart card functionality, which is a
definite requirement for future transactions. Currently, financial institutions are gearing
themselves to convert to smart cards instead of the magnetic stripe card.
The impact of this development is far-reaching, as informal traders such as spaza shops could
well provide the opportunity to consumers with these services such as purchasing tickets to
watch their favourite team's match and who knows, perhaps provide pension collections.
