San Diego, CA – February 2, 2004: Market Simple Inc. announces the first ever publication of Snitch in San Diego, a free newsweekly sharing news, commentary and features about crime and justice.

The preview edition of Snitch is designed to give advertisers, distributors, and the general public an idea of what the publication is all about. The regular weekly edition of Snitch will be distributed throughout San Diego beginning in March. Snitch will include humor driven neighborhood-based crime reports, syndicated features, and stories from the criminal justice communities on a local, national and international level.

“Snitch will cover serious local and national crime stories and issues, but we also will keep an eye out for the absurd,” said Jan Schwarz. “We intend to be provocative and edgy, and we hope to amuse, enlighten and entertain. We are committed to quality journalism, aggressive, honest reporting and to keeping San Diegans informed about crime in their communities.”

Schwarz is the newspaper’s owner and publisher. Nicholas Lockwood is the company’s marketing and circulation manager.

Lockwood said the timing is right for a niche publication like Snitch. “There is a national fascination with crime and criminals,” he said. “Crime and justice affect everyone and control a huge amount of public resources. We are going to get at important stories and help people better understand these critical issues.”

Regular features in Snitch will include Firm Convictions, a column by Rick Collette a former Hell’s Angel who spent nine years in federal prison. Other interesting content includes: The Handwriting Doctor, Michelle Dresbold, a crime crossword puzzle, the Cosmic Butt Kick horoscopes, and Post Mortem, a column about crime history.

“We are delighted to have San Diego in the growing Snitch family,” said Russ Maney, chief operating officer of the Louisville, KY-based newspaper chain. “Jan Schwarz and Nicholas Lockwood are a perfect match for our company and we look forward to their help and expertise as we make Snitch a nationwide operation.”

Maney said Snitch has newspapers in Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina and California. Franchising discussions are in the works in Ohio, Nevada, and northern Virginia.

Snitch is directed at a diverse audience of readers across San Diego County. Its audience is everyone interested in crime and in the incidents that are happening in their neighborhoods.

“We will be in convenience stores, restaurants, clubs, malls, stores and supermarkets – we’re any place where people gather and spend money,” Schwarz said. “Our readership is going to be consumers with disposable income. They also represent a high number of women and minorities. This demographic is traditionally very hard to reach through other media and makes our publication very attractive to businesses in San Diego County.”
