The D.C. Coalition for Housing Justice, Inc, in conjunction with the All Souls Church Housing Task Force will hold a Tenant Empowerment and Homeownership Forum on March 28,2004 from 2-3:30pm. The event will take place at All Souls Church (16th and Harvard St., NW, Washington, DC.. )The purpose of this event is to discuss bill 15-133, an amendment to The Sale and Conversion Act of 2003.
The Tenant Empowerment and Homeownership forum will include speakers such as Lester Cuffie (Executive Director of D.C. Coalition for Housing Justice Inc), At - Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson (Sponsor of 15-133 bill) and Mr. Raymond Starkes ( 1stMortgageAmericaCompany and Host of the WOL 1450 Program “The Law Mortages and You”). There will also be live entertainment by poets and other distinguished guests.
According to housing advocates over 125 apartments have been sold in the district without the tenants being given an opportunity to purchase their building.”If the current legal loophole continue to exist within the Conversion and Sale Act of 1985, tenants will continue to be confronted with displacement. ”
