Narrowband is now – and it’s set for the future!

Kevin Swann, Sales and Marketing Director of semiconductor manufacturer CML Microcircuits UK Ltd, has been elected as Chairman of the Board for the Mobitex Association - the worldwide forum for the Mobitex business community for network operators, software developers, hardware manufacturers and customers. Supporting the Chairman is Vice Chairman of the Board Folke Berggvist (Strategy Director - Mobitex Ericsson Sweden), and Board Member Charles Nelson (President - Cingular Interactive US).

Mobitex is a proven technology used for mission-critical business applications, leading the way in wireless data technology due to its outstanding reliability, consistent performance and the fact that it’s always on. Swann indicates that ‘narrowband is now!’ and with over 1.2 million professional business users, Mobitex growth shows that it is fast becoming the technology of choice, in terms of reliability, cost, system expansion and support.

Mobitex operates on an open international standard, using narrowband radio technology. This combines the benefits of mobile technology with high data security, long battery life, extensive network coverage and fast data rates.

There are currently more than 30 Mobitex networks in operation on five continents, provided by the likes of Transcomm (UK), Cingular (USA), RAM (Netherlands), Real Telecom (South Korea), ST Mobile Data (Singapore) and Sky Networks (China). This not only makes it the largest wireless data market, but also the only truly global market. Some of the networks are public, meaning that anyone may purchase network service from the local operator, while others are owned and operated by companies and services for their own use.

Mobitex Products are manufactured by the likes of CNI, Wavenet, RIM, Good Technology, Panasonic, Itronix, Melard, Maxon and Casio to name just a few. Products operating on the Mobitex network include PDAs and communications devices, along with integrated Mobitex modem operated Point Of Sale (POS) systems, alarms, vending machines, parking meters and many other data communications devices. Mobitex products are used by Ambulance, Fire and Police services, along with businesses seeking a competitive advantage; in fact more than 400 of the World’s Fortune 1000 companies use Mobitex in their businesses.

At the heart of Mobitex technology lies the crucial hardware, the central CMX909B communications GMSK modem chip, designed and manufactured by CML Microcircuits (UK) Ltd. For more than 30 years, CML has provided ultra low-power solutions for a variety of communications needs in wireless data, wireline telecoms and two-way radio areas, with narrowband radio communications being the company’s specialist area.

CML will soon announce the latest generation Mobitex modem chip, taking integration and functionality to new heights. This will further enhance the Mobitex network and supporting products, showing that narrowband really is now – and it’s set for the future.

Ends.
