March 17, 2004 (Press Release) --
Poop clean-up week (April 27 - May 3)is fast approaching and one organization that is helping keep our grounds clean is APAWS a non-profit organization which stands for the "Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists" found at www.apaws.org they have a list of pooper scooper's in several states who have taken on this task of keeping pace with cleaning up dog poop from our yards, kennels and city parks.
The problem with dog waste management in our cities is reflected in the Pooper Scooper Laws, both in the U.S. and abroad, which impose considerable fines upon dog owners who do not pick up after their dogs. Aside from cleaning up your dog waste, you'll be helping our environment by not contaminating our streams, rivers and oceans. Recent studies from the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) have shown that pet waste is a significant contributor to bacterial contamination in ocean water after a storm. Storm water carries litter, pet waste and other pollutants directly into the ocean. Storm water does not receive any treatment prior to discharging into the ocean.
Cleaning up dog poop will help keep down the potential threat of parasites that can harm your pet and family. Our pets, children who play outside, and adults especially (pregnant women) are most at risk for infection from some of the bacteria and parasites found in pet waste. Dealing with pet waste is one of those things that every pet owner must deal with, but no one likes to talk about. The fact is the majority of our community pet waste problems result from the inappropriate handling of pet waste. You can benefit by having your yard clean on a weekly basis which will leave you with a safe clean environment for your family and dog. Keeping the yard clean keeps the dog cleaner, since the dog won't be stepping or playing in the mess on relief trips outside. A clean yard also gives you and your dog more exercise space.
Do your part when you take your dog for a walk or to a park. Doggie-Bags™ pooper scooper stations are a great public service - a reminder to dog owners to pick up behind their pets, and a display of your areas commitment to keep unwanted dog waste from becoming a threat and nuisance to the safety and enjoyment for all that use the public spaces.
