Inspection Reveals the Most Handicap Accessible Cruise Ship Ever
Cape Canaveral, Fla., January 20, 2004 – People with disabilities now have a brand new ship that caters to their needs to call home on their next cruise. During an “accessible” inspection performed in December 2003, Mariner of the Seas, launched by Royal Caribbean International in November 2003, passed with flying colors.
“This is perhaps the most accessible cruise ship ever built!” exclaims Elizabeth Kelly, owner of Best Bets Travel in Melbourne, Florida, during her accessible inspection, “In all my years inspecting cruise ships for their accessibility, I have never been so impressed with a ship that put so much thought in all of their “accessible” amenities.”
This brand new, innovative cruise ship is the first cruise ship that can be fully experienced firsthand by guests with disabilities. Virtually the entire ship is easy to move around and through by anyone in a wheelchair. Gone are many of the bulkhead barriers found in most other cruise ships that block access to bathrooms, dining rooms, and other entertainment areas of older ships.
According to Kelly, “The accessible cabins are excellent. They are well thought out and very roomy.” Amenities inside the cabins include: clothes hangars designed to be pulled lower for those in wheelchairs, making hanging up your clothes much easier, extra wide bathroom doorways that make wheelchair access very convenient, and the showers are large enough to accommodate wheelchairs. Even the TV, phone, dressers, table, and nightstands all are lowered for easy access.
On most cruise ships it has been nearly impossible for anyone in a wheelchair to enjoy those great balcony views, but on the Mariner of the Seas, accessible cabins have extra wide doorways that make wheeling onto the cabin balconies easy. On Mariner of the Seas, the “accessible” cabins are roomy and were obviously designed to accommodate up to four people.
