March 31, 2004 (Press Release) --
VEGAS BUZZ FLASH: Siegfried and Roy Marquee Coming Down
Fans heartbroken - no word from Germany
It's over.
Operations began this morning to dismantle the Siegfried and Roy Marquee in front of the Mirage, once an enduring fixture of the Las Vegas strip.
(Scaffolding, later, totally removed leaving only the top frame with the legend "Magicians of the Century." Here, what appears to be the dynamic duo of magic is actually a black curtain being lowered over their photos; seconds later the white tiger was concealed. )
The Marquee had watched over the strip for nearly a decade, and continued to do so long after the Mirage Tragedy.
There was no ceremony, no pomp given the circumstance. Bigger fish to fry, perhaps. German sources were also silent, as they have been for over a month. We received a few sporadic emails from Berlin, but nothing of consequence.
Vegas Buzz regrets the missed photo opportunity having had no prior warning from any of our sources. However, prior photos of the Marquee are available in the Vegas Gallery section of Vegas Buzz.
We reproduce here at least one webcam shot from the WynnCam at the under-construction Wynn Las Vegas resort. The Siegfried and Roy Marquee was one of the more dramatic statements on the strip, and starred in hundreds of movies and TV specials. More News when available.
