April 13, 2004 (Press Release) --

opponents of a proposed toxic waste incinerator in Northern New Brunswick, will be accepting questions and comments on the Bennett Environmental Inc. draft approval to operate
at www.stopbennett.com until Friday, April 16th, 2004. The Public Participation Regulation under the Clean Air Act, requires a public participation process to be conducted prior
to the issuance of approval to operate a
“class 1 sources” of emission. The 120 day public review of this application, allotted
by the Government of New Brunswick, began on Nov. 27, 2003 and ends on April 19, 2004.
The proposed Bennett Environmental Inc.
facility in Belledune, New Brunswick,
involves importing and treating 100,000 tons
per year of contaminated soils containing creosote and hydrocarbons coming from Canada
and the United States. As of January 31th 2004, 46,000 people from New Brunswick and Québec
had already signed a petition against this project. Since launching the site on February 29th, 2004, stopbennett.com has collected thousands of additional signatures with an online form. Signatures have been pouring
in from friends, supporters and residents
past and present from throughout New Brunswick, across Canada, the United States and from
as far away as Asia.
"People feel very strongly about this
issue and they needed a destination where
they could stay current on news and take action, " said Robert Frigault, creator of stopbennett.com. "They required a website
where they could meet, collaborate and unite
to make themselves heard."
"People in our society need to take action
for the harmful things that are being done
to our environment and not just sit back
and let things happen while complaining
about it. I’m glad you guys are stepping up...it's about time someone did!" said
Sheri Dickinson, a visitor to stopbennett.com. Comments from petitioners are being compiled, signatures are being validated and letters
from a letter writing campaign, along with supporting documents are being assembled
into a presentation by volunteers and will
be submitted by stopbennett.com to members
of government by April 19th. The ‘stopbennett’ campaign will continue until the people of New Brunswick are heard by their government.
