May 12, 2004 (Press Release) --
As if George W Bush's troubles could not get any worse, the first results of a US Presidential Election poll voted on by people from countries other than the U.S.A. puts his support at 4.5%
"Already, we have received votes from over 50 countries and it's pretty well unanimous - George W. Bush is not a popular president with the rest of the world, " say Sunirmalya Symons from the World Peace Society of Australia, the host of the election at www.worldpeace.org.au/virtualelection.asp
He says the goal of the poll is to help give people from other countries a say in the US Presidential Election.
"However ignoble, this is the most important election the world has faced in our lifetimes and it is critical that the world engages in the process."
Ralph Nader and John Kerry share the bulk of the votes but it seems there is also a lot of support for Dennis Kucinich's strong anti-war and pro-peace stance. "We received hundreds of emails asking why Dennis wasn't a candidate. It didn't seem to matter that he isn't going to win the Democratic nomination, his supporters are extremely passionate," says Sunirmalya.
Sunirmalya says that the World Peace Society of Australia would love for the poll to really get some momentum. "There have already been over 5,000 votes but we'd love to have 50,000." He believes that the ideal result would be for a big mainstream media outlet to adopt the idea and put together their own poll and get hundreds of thousands, or even millions of votes. "I am sure the result would be the same, but it would be great for us to really credibly explain to the American government that they do not live in isolation from the rest of the world."
