NEW YORK -- Nearly 59 years after the end of World War II, the National World War II Memorial will be dedicated in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 29. The dedication ceremony in our nation's capitol will be simulcast in Bryant Park as part of the city's "Tribute to a Generation" event. This will allow thousands of New York WW II veterans, unable to attend the Washington dedication, to see and be a part of this historic event.
WHO? WW II veterans, their families, friends, veterans of all eras, and proud citizens of New York. The event is free and the public is cordially invited.
WHAT? Live broadcast of the World War II Memorial dedication in Washington, D.C.
WHEN? Saturday May 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE? Bryant Park, Avenue of the Americas & 42nd St., Midtown Manhattan
WHY? The United War Veterans Council, along with the Mayor's Office of Veterans' Affairs, will host the "Tribute to a Generation" which will include live music, military reunions, displays of WW II memorabilia, military ceremonial units, and educational opportunities for all ages.
Starting at 11 a.m. in Bryant Park, pre-ceremony entertainment will take attendees back to the wartime era through music, video images, newsreel clips, and reminiscences of the time. Musical performances will include the U.S. Marine Corps Albany Band, the Army Reserve's 319th "Statue of Liberty" Band, the Navy's Region Northeast Band and the USO Metropolitan New York Entertainment Troupe.
At 2 p.m. the memorial dedication will be simulcast from Washington on the big screen in Bryant Park. The ceremony will recognize the addition of the memorial to the National Mall while paying tribute to the service and sacrifice of "The Greatest Generation."
