May 28, 2004 (Press Release) --
Verdant Group plc has taken delivery of a Johnston VT650 truck-mounted road sweeper after switching from a competitor’s machine on the grounds of running costs. Verdant had been servicing Melton Borough Council’s street cleansing contract using a single-engine sweeper from another manufacturer but opted to replace the machine with Johnston’s twin-engine sweeper after conducting a fuel cost analysis.
The Kent-based municipal service provider found that the twin-engined machine cost less to run in fuel simply because the auxiliary engine can be powered by low-tax ‘red’ diesel, which costs a fraction of the price of road fuel. Pete Bevington, Verdant’s Fleet Engineer, favours the twin-engined sweeper design for this very reason. “We had started Melton’s contract in April last year with a single engine sweeper, but decided to switch to the Johnston twin engine machine after taking a closer look at running costs across our fleet”, he says.
The Verdant Group already runs a number of Johnston sweepers including 600 Series, 5000 Series and Compact machines to service its contracts in Stratford-upon-Avon, High Wycombe and Warwick, among others. Verdant’s decision to buy Johnston’s latest VT650 model came after seeing the new sweeper at Johnston’s Brands Hatch launch last autumn. The machine, fitted with Johnston’s powerful Supawash system, was quickly pressed into service in Melton, and joins the Johnston 5000 mid-sized sweeper already in use in the Borough.
