DreamCon, Jacksonville’s Only Genre Convention, to Raise $20,000 for American Diabetes Association

May 29, 2004

Jacksonville's DreamCon event names the American Diabetes Association as official charity of choice for 2004 inaugural event. The stated goal is to raise $20,000 for this worthwhile cause.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) May 29, 2004 -- JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In the interest of community health, awareness and contribution, the DreamCon event organizers have named the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as the official charity of choice for its 2004 inaugural event. In fact, the stated goal of the event is to raise $20,000 for this worthwhile cause.

In turn, as a way to raise awareness about DreamCon’s commitment, the DreamCon staff will participate in this weekend’s Diabetes Exposed event on the University of North Florida campus.

“We’ll be staffing the booth on Saturday, and we’ll probably raise some funds,” says DreamCon’s Chief Organizer, Ron Methvin. “But the bulk of the money will be raised during DreamCon through events such as an on-site charity auction that many stars have donated items for. There will also be concerts and other exciting fundraising activities; plus a portion of all three-day ticket sales is already earmarked to go to directly to the American Diabetes Association, so every time someone buys a three-day pass we’re that much closer to our goal.”

When asked how DreamCon settled on the American Diabetes Association as its first beneficiary, Methvin is quick to answer.

“These kinds of conventions, or ‘cons,’ have a long history of raising money for charity,” he explains. “A number of legendary genre actors and writers, such as Anne Rice, George Lucas, Halle Berry and Piers Anthony — and even some of our staff — have been personally affected by diabetes, and that’s how we decided on the ADA.”
