June 1, 2004 (Press Release) --
Austin, TX –“Kama`aina”, a Hawaiian word meaning native by right of birth, is the title of Shama Ko’s newest photography exhibit. The exhibit features an array of images taken throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Austin’s public is invited to view the unique beauty of Shama’s Hawai`i at the Relson Gracie Jiu-jitsu Austin Academy.
“Kama`aina” contains a variety of subjects from the endangered Hawaii Monk Seal (`Ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua), to the hand sculpting of traditional tiki gods by a Native Hawaiian artist. Next to each photograph is a brief summary, which contains information on the history and significance of the sites and rareness of the subjects. Shama Ko has been a local photographer in Austin for the past five years. It was Austin’s established artist community and blend of small town and big city characteristics that made Shama relocate from Los Angeles.
“Being around creative people and inspiring surroundings has encouraged me to explore the depth of my artistic vision that has its roots in the power and beauty of Hawai`i, my birthplace. ” says Shama. “Kama`aina” is the first of many exhibits Shama hopes to bring to Austin over the next few months to come.
The exhibit will run from June 2nd thru June 31st at the Austin Relson Gracie Academy at 2919 Manchaca Ste. 210. Call 512-693-8258 for academy hours of operation.
