June 4, 2004 (Press Release) --
One of the more unpleasant and hazardous aspects of sweeping the streets is dust. Whether sweeping by hand or machine, dust is an inevitable by-product of the job, causing discomfort for the operator and those around.
Dust is made up of several nasty contaminants, including lead, fungi, toxins and bacteria such as salmonella and E-coli, so it is clearly in everyone’s interest to reduce the amount of dust generated while cleaning the streets.
It was this that prompted engineers at Johnston Madvac to look more closely into the dust problem, resulting in the development of a clever two-stage filtering system for its PS300 pedestrian sweeper.
The first stage puts the collected litter into a fibrous collection bag, which provides initial filtration of dust and debris. The second stage consists of four heavy duty panel filters incorporating 25m2 of filtering material, into which virtually all remaining dust is captured. Together, the two stages provide filtration down to as low as 8 microns, with an optional 2 micron capability.
Independent tests of the system have revealed that the PS300 in fact captures up to 27 times more inhalable dust and nine times more bacteria than other pedestrian sweepers. This proves that the machine can protect operators and pedestrians alike from exposure to the hazardous substances contained in dust – and making it far more comfortable to operate.
The PS300’s low dust operation is not the only safety and comfort advantage of the machine. The sweeper also incorporates an optional High Dump system, which lifts the bagless litter hopper and tilts the collected refuse into sacks, completely eliminating the need for any manual handling of the contents. A luxury ride-on seat is also available for ultimate operator comfort and convenience.
Greenwich Council in London recently took delivery of 25 Johnston Madvac PS300s to support its Cleansweep initiative, following several months of rigorous testing of the various pedestrian sweepers on the market. The Council finally chose the PS300 for its ingenious High Dump system and no-touch litter handling capability, but primarily for its clean, dustless operation, which they considered to be of benefit to their operators.
