Music Buzz Featured Artist for June 2004
Tierney Sutton's Dancing in the Dark
Velvety, haunting, strangely seductive...
Tierney Sutton
Vegas Buzz selection for June 2004 - Music Buzz
We were enchanted with our recent listen to Ms. Sutton's 'Dancing in the Dark' album - "Inspired by the music of Frank Sinatra."
And indeed, it sounded so.
We immediately wished for someone to 'Dance in the Dark' with. We wistfully wished it could be Ms. Sutton, but then, that's the magic of her charm.
The background music provided by a 'dream band' which included the likes of
Christian Jacob, piano
Trey Henry, bass
Ray Brinker, drums
with
Orchestra conducted by Christian Jacob
Impeccably unique phrasing to the classic "Where or When."
Hats off to Tierney!
Without a Song gave us chills ...
But don't just take our word!
A Few Reviews
"Any contemporary singer who evokes the standard-bearer Frank Sinatra is courting danger, but on Sutton's new album, "Dancing in the Dark," she finds her own way into the Master's material. Her delicate swing and sensitivity are bracing."
~The New Yorker
"...Tierney Sutton's Dancing in the Dark is inspired by, and includes songs from, the darker side of the Frank Sinatra songbook. When you've loved and lost the way Frank has, then you know what life's about."
-- Vanity Fair
"...an uncompromising experimenter on par with Patricia Barber and Kurt Elling...[Dancing in the Dark] proves that those who sing what they believe and believe what they sing will always be coolest. Just like Sinatra."
-- Jazz Times
"The jazz listening audience will fall in love with this CD. Highly recommended. This is a memorable, intimate listening experience, one to be savored again and again, often."
-- JazzReview.com
"Do not be surprised if this is the one that pushes her over the boundary that will enable her to be regarded as one of the generation's next great jazz vocalists."
-- EnjoytheMusic.com
"Sutton's new CD is absolutely delicious and very satisfying. Everything about the sound quality, phrasing, coloring and delivery is superb. Five stars and more...perhaps the best jazz album of 2004."
-- Capitol Community News
From the very first sound of "What'll I do", this CD positively drips class. Tierney Sutton, backed by her long-standing trio, sings her unashamed love for Sinatra with style and poignancy. Some well known, and even lesser known songs are taken on board, backed by the impeccable piano of Christian Jacob, who also conducts the strings, bass player Trey Henry and drummer Ray Brinker.
"I Think Of You", captures the darkly bittersweet essence of this CD; the arrangements are created with great love and care, Ms Sutton's voice is effortless and beautiful as she strokes each note with a pristine clarity. "Where Or When", Without A Song", "I Could Have Told You", "Emily", "Last Night When We Were Young", lesser known pieces, but made into outstanding material when given a somberly tinged, almost worshipful interpretation by Ms. Sutton. A CD that is both delicate and delicious; if you like Sinatra you will love Tierney Sutton.
