June 10, 2004 (Press Release) --
The artists participating in Inspiraciones Mexicanas are highly respected masters
including Emigdio Vasquez, Frank Romero, Richard Lopez, Marciano Martinez,
Guillermo Valentin, Richard Martinez, and Javier Alvarez-Palomar.
The works featured in this exhibition include sculptures, ceramics and paintings in
watercolor, acrylic and oil. Each piece reflects the artist’s unique style, vast experience
and finely honed technique. Taken together the work presented in the show offers a
sampling of the trends in contemporary Mexican and Chicano art over the last 40 years.
Emigdio Vasquez paints photorealistic still lifes and portraits. His work is often
political but always full of detail, soulfulness and reflecting the human condition. Frank
Romero is known for paintings and murals that often vibrate with kinetic energy. He has
done a series on cars that include the large mural “Going to the Olympics” for the 1984
Olympics in Los Angeles which adorns the 101 freeway.
Richard Lopez focuses on the landscape and figures in motion while using color to
convey a sense of timelessness. He explores the relationships between people and
investigates spiritual and psychological issues. Marciano Martinez uses watercolors to
present churches, ships and landscapes. Richard Martinez also uses watercolors to paint
seascapes and desert scenes. In addition he works with raku ceramics.
Guillermo Valentin is a sculptor who works with clay, wood, bronze, marble and cast
stone. Each work is unique and not part of a series. His creations represent freedom of
movement, harmony of lines and celebration of beauty. Javier Alvarez-Palomar shares his
dreams and emotions in his still life and figurative paintings. His paintings are
masterpieces of color, composition, light, shadow and texture.
Icaro Gallery is now open Friday and Saturday from 1:00-7:00 PM and by
