John A. De Vito's book, The Devil's Apocrypha, has spawned a new movement. A group calling themselves The Church of the Fallen have started a religion based on the philosophies of this occult thriller, which proports to retell the bible from Satan's point of view.
"There is nothing evil about the philosophies of the book. They are a guide that we can live by. A way that will make the world a better place," says David Litts, founder of the church. "We have chapters all over the world, thanks to the internet."
The Devil's Apocrypha has been an inetrnational bestseller with Amazon.com in th United States, Canada, and in England. In fact, at one point, it was the number one selling horror book in the United Kingdom.
"I think it just hit a cord with some people," says author John A. De Vito. "I can understand how some would come to use the book as a bible." But is the tale fact or fiction? The author isn't telling. "Let the reader decide," he says.
In todays world of spiritual ambiguity, is it odd that a book would spawn a new religion? Not at all, and it wouldn't be the first time.
The book, written in an errie biblical style, draws in the reader and immediately puts him into an alternate reality where the Devil happens to be the good guy. Can the author pull it off? The Church of the Fallen would give a resounding 'yes'.
