More Than A Bookstore is the newest offering of The SpiritHouse Project, a national organization that uses the arts, research, action, spiritual reflection, coalition building and education to dismantle injustice and to build a nonviolent movement for social change. Directed by Ruby Sales, civil rights veteran, historian and activist, More Than A Bookstore is an extension of the mission of SpiritHouse. This one of a kind bookstore and space specializes in domestic and international writings of non-violent resistance through literature, radical theologies, world music and films. This amiable bookstore provides a large selection of children’s books from ethnic communities around the globe.







More Than A Bookstore is more than a place where books are sold. The bookstore has a unique setting that radiates a homelike, inspiring and cozy feeling. And it provides support for community leadership and creates room where diverse people can come together to talk about and solve critical social issues. More Than A Bookstore offers readings on: World Religions, Ethnic Studies and Resistance; Black Theology and African Diaspora Studies; Liberation Theology and Resistance; Feminist Theology; Women Studies and Resistance; African & African American Studies; Progressive Political Theory and Social Critique and Same Gender Loving Studies and Resistance and more.

With the challenges that minority bookstores and enterprises face, More Than A Bookstore is proud to be apart of the few African American bookstores in the Nation’s Capitol and worldwide that brings you writings, social and creative expressions from America, Africa & the Diaspora and beyond. Come visit us, we’re open Mondays through Fridays between 10:00am and 6:00pm and on Saturdays from 10:00am –7:00pm.
