July 11, 2004 (Press Release) --
Former IBM Director of Corporate Business Intelligence, Sydney Newman Dotson, is a corporate spy turned into a detective in 'No Greater Deception, A True Texas Story'
Despite waves of publicity and a rock-star reception at a book signing at the Louisiana Private Investigators Convention in New Orleans, sales of Sydney Newman Dotson's memoirs at Houston bookstores are modest, as the climate at local retailers resembled more of a presidential library than a frenzied concert.
Dotson's book was officially released in January, but local booksellers hardly faced the mobs of fans and political junkies that lined the halls of the New Orleans Convention Center.
Barnes & Noble and Borders Bookstores were not prepared to meet the demand for this shocking tell all book written by the local Galveston County native. Customers were often told the book is "not in stock" or "not available."
Sales were better at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Webster, TX which took numerous orders by walk-in customers or over the telephone. Employees consistently reordered the author's book throughout the day.
A League City resident picked up her copy from the Barnes & Noble Bookstore. "I read about the book and author in the Galveston Daily News," she said, referring to the article Ted Streuli wrote about Dotson's book and upcoming PBS TV interview. "I can't wait to read what she's written about our community. I think I know the author's real name."
She was particularly interested in learning: "The name of the police chief that married the town whore," she said with a wink.
A Galleria resident said he called ahead to make sure the book was in stock, then nabbed a copy on Amazon.com.
A woman from Texas City said, "I understand the Houston Bar Association is reviewing Dotson's book to see what can be done to reform our Texas justice system. Everyone knows local politics sucks in Galveston County. I hope this book is the beginning of massive reform."
"I like reading true stories written by local authors," said the man. "I haven't been able to find much written about the gambling, prostitution and bootlegging period in Harris and Galveston counties. What the police chief's daughter has to say could be very interesting."
Others were more skeptical.
"I'm not interested in hearing about her life from her perspective; I don't agree with her perspective," said a gift shop seller from Kemah who passed on the book. "I know the woman who's described as the evil stepmother. She's a personal friend of mine and a very nice woman.
ABOUT THE BOOK
"It's a real life Texas Soap Opera of Love, Death, Betrayal and Justice," says Liz Carpenter, author and Lady Bird Johnson's WHITE HOUSE Press Secretary.
"Hold onto your bootstraps! Sydney and her sister Heather will take you on a gut-wrenching roller coaster ride that occurs after their father dies and their stepmother produces a suspicious Last Will and Testament that leaves the stepmother the entire estate. What the two sisters discover makes them question everything they once thought was real.
NO GREATER DECEPTION is available internationally on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com websites today.
