Area Pre-K Activists Join PARADE Magazine and Share Our Strength in National Effort

July 8th, 2004� Each year, thirteen million children in the United States are hungry or at risk of hunger. That�s why PARADE Magazine and Share Our Strength, a leading national anti-hunger organization, are hosting the second annual Great American Bake Sale� to support the fight to end child hunger in America.

Garrett Wiehler and Damon Halvis, both Pre-K 5 year olds and close friends from Monrovia and Kemptown respectively will host � The Garrett & Damon Stop Hunger Now Bake Sale� on July 13th, 2004 from 7AM until 1PM in front of Slender Lady fitness Salon in the Green Valley Plaza on Rte. 80 in Monrovia.

The Great American Bake Sale was introduced last spring by PARADE Magazine and Share Our Strength. More than 350,000 Americans took part, helping to raise more than $1 million to fight child hunger in the U.S. From funds raised, Share Our Strength awarded grants to innovative nonprofits fighting child hunger across the country.

�When I saw on the TV that there were so many hungry kids in the world, I couldn�t believe it�, says Garrett Todd Wiehler from the Tranquility area in Monrovia. �So I asked my Mom if we could call my friend Damon and if he would help me do this. He said yes and then our Moms showed us the website�. �I never thought about other kids just like me being hungry until Garrett told me and I thought he was tricking me, but it�s true�, said Damon Halvis.

The 2004 Great American Bake Sale launched on April 4, 2004 with a cover story in PARADE Magazine. This national fundraising program is made possible through the sponsorship support of ABC Entertainment, Betty Crocker baking products and Tyson Foods, Inc.
