For_Immediate_Release:

July 12, 2004 (Press Release) -- The 2nd Annual National Park Passport Stampers Convention will take place at the Moraine Park amphitheater in Rocky Mtn. National Park on July 24th at 1:30pm. The Convention will allow people with an interest in National Parks to come together, tell stories, and show off their Passport To Your National Parks® books. In these books, park visitors receive cancellation stamps at each of America's 388 official National Park Units and at many of the more than 100 Affiliated Areas and other designated areas under the administration of the National Park Service. There are presently well over 1500 stamps; many units have multiple stamps.

Craig Bailey, a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is the host of this year's Convention. Bailey says, "The idea for a Convention was born during one of the earliest stamping chats on the www.parkstamps.org website." This website hosts message boards for collectors to post trip reports, debate National Park related issues, and chat. The manager of the website, Mike Brown, a photographer, says, "As a manager of www.parkstamps.org, I think it is wonderful that there are so many people who have the same passion for collecting National Park Passport Stamps that I do. The message boards dedicated to stamp collecting have become more and more popular and a get-together or 'Convention' is a perfect opportunity for members of those boards to meet."

"Mike Brown, member Alan Ripps, and I thought up the idea of some stamp collectors getting together. That idea blossomed into the first annual Convention held at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in August of 2003," Bailey continues. Brown says, "Last year's Convention was very small and informal compared to what we have planned for this year. I expect that next year's, and each following Convention, will grow in size and recognition." Today, the website has over 100 active members, many of whom have been to more than 200 units. This year's Convention will have guests from as far away as California, Virginia, New Jersey and Connecticut. Scott Stransky, a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has been to 269 parks, will be attending the event. Stransky says, "My goal is to get to all of the park units. This Convention will allow me to meet people with the same goal and share travel experiences with them." A number of families that will be present have been to over 300 park units, though anyone with a strong interest in National Parks is encouraged to attend.

For additional information about the Convention, and the current master list of all cancellation stamps (compiled by member Nancy Bandley, with contributions from all of the members of the group), please visit http://www.stampconvention.com and http://www.parkstamps.org.

A followup release will be issued after the Convention.
