SHOW DIARIES
New Zealand
Arriving here was mind blowing. I couldn't even deal with what I was looking at: the most ridiculous mountain and water range you could ever imagine. Just incredible. It blows away anything I've ever seen in New York as far as beauty or fauna or aesthetics, there's NOTHING like it in New York, I promise you that. Except that there's a great spa... not that I have much experience being in spas or wearing the little diaper I had to wear to get the treatment.
I have found that the people of New Zealand have a very high self-opinion which is actually refreshing and nice to be around because in New York you're always around people with high self-opinions but it's really manufactured and a whole lot of crap. A lot of stuff we do in New York is really meaningless whereas here they actually live in this amazing place and they're all extreme athletes - hikers and paragliders and skiers and kayakers. They're entitled to that high self-opinion. I also love their refreshing, laid back attitude. I've learned that life doesn't have to be all concrete and hustle. I've really kicked back and enjoyed the trip - I'm really CONTENT.
We got into town just after the New Zealand national rugby team, the All Blacks, got smoked by their rival, Australia. So we caught a lot of attitude about it. The All Blacks had been favored to win but they didn't. I am thrilled with the whole concept of the 'All Blacks' rugby team. It's hysterical that New Zealand is this very Caucasian area and their team is called the 'All Blacks.' I bought a hat, a jersey, a pullover, a sleeveless shirt, and a ball. I'm gonna wear it in New York City and I just know I'll get these funny looks like, "All Blacks, what's that? What kind of Public Enemy guy is this?" But it's just the New Zealand Rugby team. I love that.
The car ride to Fox Glacier was a real bonding experience for me, Jason and Elliott. We were just acting crazy the whole ride... goofing around, a lot of little funny jokes. They are two of the funniest men on this planet and we are still getting to know each other. We have no idea what is on the horizon from day to day, so there's a lot of excitement every morning about what we might be doing. I got really giddy about it and that giddiness made for insanity between us. I get along with them unbelievably well. There's just nothing about them I don't like, especially Jason - he's such a cool kid and reminds me so much of people that I've met along the way in my life, maybe cause I went to college in Connecticut and he's a Boston guy. And Elliott is non-stop giggles. We may have snapped at each other a few times but nothing that even remotely changed my opinion of them.
This vacation has been packed with the kind of stuff I love doing on vacations but it's all stuff I haven't done yet - so that made it double-amazing. My head got blown off. My favorite thing, I have to say, would be the bungy jumping... or the fly by wire... or the paragliding... ok, I can't pick a favorite. It's just been such a perfect trip.
I definitely would love to come back... but I have to say, I probably won't since it's just so far away that you don't repeat a trip there if you're really trying to be a world traveler. You've got to move on. I saw it and I got to do everything I would want to do there.
