What began as the “HOT or NOT” voting process in June, with more than 1,200 bands vying to earn enough votes to win a performance showcase with a major record label in New York City and a full equipment package from tour partners Tama Drums, Washburn Guitar and Randall Amps, the competition is about to heat up as the “ZIPPO HOT TOUR” semi-finals begins. Kicking off October 1, and continuing through November 20, the “ZIPPO HOT TOUR” will feature more than 60 of the hottest up-and-coming rock bands from eight U.S. cities, who emerged with the most “HOT” votes from their fans in round one, will perform live at local venues throughout the eight-week “ZIPPO HOT TOUR.”
“A sea of flickering lighters saluting a band, or what has come to be referred to as the “Zippo moment”, said Mark Paup, Director of Global Marketing for Zippo Manufacturing Company, “is a part of almost every live show and we felt this tour was a perfect match for us to support the lifestyle of the local music scene.”

Fans from Austin, TX; Palm Beach, FL; Minneapolis, MN; Pittsburgh, PA; San Diego, CA; Ann Arbor/Detroit, MI; Raleigh/Durham, NC; and Boulder/Denver, CO, can cast their votes by attending the live local performances, where they will be given a voting card to submit. Additionally, Zippo will be on hand giving away Zippo lighters, beanies, T-shirts, lanyards and more. One lucky band from each city will advance to the finals round in December for their chance to be voted one of the next big rock bands.
Bands may also gain national broadcast exposure as HDNet, providing up to 20 hours of original features per week, produced in the highest quality 1080i HDTV format, will chronicle the tour and broadcast the “Zippo Hot Tour Concert Series”, which debuts in January 2005.
Throughout the month of September, fans can go to participating Tower Records stores, recognized throughout the world for its unique brand of retailing, to pick up free Island/Zippo branded CD samplers, with CD purchase of select Island artists, and enter to win limited edition Zippo lighters. Samplers also include a discount coupon good towards an online purchase of Zippo lighters.
For the “ZIPPO HOT TOUR,” Zippo partnered with FUSE-a Los Angeles-based promotional marketing firm--to devise the on-premise marketing strategy and to design, implement and manage the exciting search that will take place through the remainder of 2004.
The “Finals” of the “ZIPPO HOT TOUR”, which begins December 1st and continues through December 31, 2004, is where music fans across the nation will have the opportunity to vote online for their favorite rock band amongst the eight finalists, at www.zippohottour.com.
