September 19, 2004 (Press Release) --
EVERETT, WA. Many of the homeless women from the Everett Gospel Mission are used to being overlooked in public. Not dressed quite fashionably enough, no hairstyle to speak of, and sometimes not even having the basic cosmetics to apply make it easy for people to just look past them. An event this Sunday, September 19, looks to change all that for these particular women. Life Changes Ministries is holding its third annual ‘Queen-for-a-Day’ event. The continued growth of the event which provides a special day of pampering for approximately 50 homeless women from the shelter and other organizations has forced a move from a church building to the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lynnwood. The event begins at 1:00pm and ends at 8:00pm.
This year two women from the Everett Gospel Mission were selected to receive dramatic makeovers. Makeovers that began weeks ago with extensive dental work and professional personal image consultations. The donated makeovers are valued at $15-20,000 each. The women will debut their new looks following dinner on Sunday.
“These women are so beaten down by the circumstances in their lives and their self-esteem is extremely low,” notes Pastor Judy Hoff, who heads Life Changes Ministries. “We want this event to be a catalyst for change in these women. With the generosity of the community we’re able to provide each woman with a makeover that also includes a new clothing outfit.”
“I can tell you from experience that most of these women who walk in with a physical demeanor that just shouts ‘defeated,’ walk out of here at the end of this event with their heads held high, full of hope and expectations.”
The women will be picked up at the women and children’s shelter by donated limousine
service provided by Silver Lining Limousine Service for the trip to the event in Lynnwood. For most of the women it will be the first time they have even seen the inside of a limousine.
The children from the shelter will not be left out. While their mothers get a day of pampering, the children will get a day at The Farm in Snohomish, WA. They will be treated to a combined birthday party where each child will receive a birthday present.
Hoff recognized that due to the unfortunate circumstances these children are in, many never get to experience a real birthday party. They miss out on an activity that many kids take for granted. The party includes pizza, cake, ice cream, clowns, entertainment and games at the six acre facility known for its huge circus tent, miniature golf course and various sport fields. The party facility is being donated by the owners of The Farm. The birthday gifts are part of a joint effort by radio station Spirit 105.3FM and Sleep Country USA.
An expected 250 volunteers are scheduled to assist at the events, including personnel from Naval Station Everett that will escort the women down the red carpet entry. Other activities for the day include studio-quality photos, a catered multi-course dinner and entertainment provided by musical group, ‘Windfall’ and actor David Shelton.
