Are you getting what you paid for?
Here is some important information regarding reverse osmosis (R/O) systems.
R/O systems waste 80-90% of all water it attempts to filter. This is known as a 10-20% "recovery rate".
All waste water is eliminated through your sink drain.
R/O systems are not rated for the removal of bacteria or parasites.
Many parasites and bacteria are too small to be filtered out with a home R/O system.
R/O systems should be maintained 4 times a year based upon household usage, water pressure and water temperature.
Most R/O companies use "one time per year" as their common answer to filter replacement, ignoring questions of usage, water pressure and water temperature.
What is a reasonable price for maintenance?
Depending upon who maintains the system, costs can range from $250 to $500 annually.
How do I know if my R/O is working properly?
The only way to know is by testing your water with a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter daily.
Is $500 a reasonable purchase price?
A $500 purchase for an R/O is among the least expensive models available. Recovery time and filtering capabilities are significantly less (and may not meet many household needs) than more expensive models.
How much training is required for the technician servicing my system?
There are no city, state or federal requirements concerning who can service the system that produces your drinking water.
How does the average total dissolved solids in home reverse osmosis treated water compare to purified water?
There is a broad range of total dissolved measurements but 60-120 parts per million is an average. Purified water has under 10 parts per million.
How much water can I use at one time from my R/O?
3 gallon tanks are standard in the industry. Once the system is empty, 1 fi hours is required to replenish the tank.
Bacteria Warnings on R/O:
"Bacteria can grow in your R/O if water sits in tanks for a period of time between usages." The warning continues: "It is always wise to run the water (from the R/O) for a few moments to avoid getting water that has sat in the fixture or filter."
Common R/O problems outlined in your service manual:
· slow water production
· milky colored water
· low water in tank
· water tastes or smells foul
· leaks
· poor water pressure
