October 19, 2004 (Press Release) --
After years of working in the print media arena, journalist Monica Barbara delves into the world of suicide and social rejection in her new book, Weight of the World.
Barbara uses her signature style of social comment to weave together the tragic, yet hilarious tale of a young woman’s search for meaning and purpose, while dealing with the pressures of being misunderstood by her peer and society.
Weight opens with the reluctant heroine, Rachel, about to commit suicide from atop a ten-story building after pausing to marvelling at the crowd she has attracted. The plot quickly takes a turn as Rachel is joined by Dr. Keaton, her wise and very strange professor. As the pages turn, Rachel and Keaton review her lonely existence, and the events that lead to her suicide. From memories of self-mutilation to social and self-rejection, Barbara describes Rachel’s wrestle with the pitfalls of a life with much to be desired. Her yellow brick road is paved with pain, and the wicked witch is her only friend.
Weight of the World marks Monica Barbara’s first venture in to the dark comedy genre. Most notably known for her journalistic work in the newspaper and magazine industry, Barbara combines her dynamic command of the written word with an irrepressible sense style and understanding to stay at the forefront of the times. She continues to be a pioneer in the world of media and fiction by pushing the envelope on such as depression and rape while still remaining true to her fan base and herself.
