October 26, 2004 (Press Release) --
Propolis translates from Greek as Defender of the city. 'Pro’ as in before and ‘Polis’ as city. One can see where we get our own word police and metropolis from. Bees make propolis by collecting a kind of balsam or nectar from buds and leaves of different types of trees and plants. They then mix this with pollen and different types of active enzymes. These enzymes are secreted from glands situated in the head and thorax of the insects.
Bees add propolis to the wax combs; they cover the inside of the hive for protection and storage. They also polish and line the next batch of cells which the queen is going to lay in so that the larvae are completely protected from the moment they hatch out.
Propolis is selective in the way it attacks pathogenic bacteria as well as mycosis and virus infections. Because of this selectivity, good bacteria such as the flora which performs a vital function in our digestive systems are not affected. Propolis has no known side effects (apart from some cases of allergy) and neither bacteria nor viruses develop a resistance to it.
In a paper by K. Lund Aagaard reporting on the experimental use of propolis on more than 50,000 people in Scandinavia, he reached the following conclusions: “The field of influence of propolis is extremely broad. It includes cancer, infection of the urinary tract, swelling of the throat, gout, open wounds, sinus congestion, colds, influenza, bronchitis, gastritis, diseases of the ears, periodontal disease, intestinal infections, ulcers, eczema, eruptions, pneumonia, arthritis, lung disease, stomach virus, headaches, Parkinson's disease, bile infections, sclerosis, circulation deficiencies, warts, conjunctivitis and hoarseness.
Propolis helps regulate hormones and is an antibiotic substance that stimulates the natural resistance of the body. Propolis may be used by everyone, sick or healthy, as a means of protection against micro-organisms. Propolis is also efficient against conditions caused by bacteria, viruses and different fungi.
