November 15, 2004 (Press Release) --
( EMAILWIRE.COM, November 15, 2004 ) Orlando, FL -- Orlando Police Officers will be distributing an informational brochure in Downtown Orlando during lunch hour today in an effort to bring more public awareness to Mayor John H. "Buddy" Dyer's unlawful actions.
Officers will stand on busy Orange Avenue street corners between noon and 1PM. A silent protest will follow at the City Council meeting at 2PM.
Officers are concerned about staffing and the announced annexation of large sections of International Drive in Orange County. The Orlando Police Department is down 14 officers in current strength. Orange County Sheriff Kevin Beary has approximately 75 deputies assigned to the area the City of Orlando wants to annex.
The Orlando Police Department does not currently have sufficient resources to adequately protect businesses and tourists along this busy corridor. The Fraternal Order of Police supports growth of the City of Orlando but only in a well-planned strategy, which includes sufficient resources and does not further harm the City's relationship with Orange County Government.
The Fraternal Order of Police has not been contacted by Mayor John H. "Buddy" Dyer on this initiative. We would gladly meet with the Mayor to discuss our concerns.
Please contact Fraternal Order of Police Labor Committee Chairman Sam Hoffman at (407)832-1975 or Lodge #25 President Jeff Williams at (407)832-1973 for more information.
