Warwick Data Systems, Inc, a leader in the secondary market for Cisco Systems equipment, recently announced that the company will start offering a short term rental program for selected Cisco Systems and other name brand networking equipment. This plan is geared for companies with short term needs for equipment as a result of a temporary project need, to prove out an application, as backup for a limited time frame or any other circumstance where purchasing is not the best option. Time frames as short as a month are available.
Alex J. Lakatos, President of Warwick Data Systems, has a strong background in information technology equipment from working for other high tech companies before he branched out on his own 20 years ago to create Warwick Data Systems Inc. in East Hanover, NJ.
Since that time, he and his staff have specialized in buying and selling used computer networking equipment. In an industry that changes constantly, Warwick has kept pace with the changes as it has built a loyal customer base and drawn in new clients ranging from small businesses to international corporations.
New information technology equipment can cost a large business millions of dollars. At the same time, the company may have existing equipment that is no longer needed. Warwick can help on both sides of that equation. Warwick buys the old equipment and refurbishes it for another client. It then sells the company another used system that meets its new needs.
"We can save a company 40% to 70% on their IT equipment," Lakatos said. "When you consider that the equipment can cost many thousands or even millions of dollars, the savings can be substantial."
Warwick is an authorized Cisco Systems dealer and, in addition to refurbishing and selling used Cisco equipment, sells new equipment for Cisco. The firm also sells other brands of used equipment. Most of equipment they sell are routers, which tell computers how to retrieve and send information and provide access to the Internet, and switches, which improve performance of computers. The equipment ties computers together within a company, which may be in one building or all over the world.
"Warwick is a small company with six employees. Because we are small we can respond to emergencies faster than a large corporation can when one of our customers has an immediate IT need," Lakatos said. "But, even though we are small, we have the expertise to advise companies on what they need as well as worldwide contacts to locate equipment they need anywhere in the world.
"We maximize a company's capital equipment budget by saving money on refurbished equipment and we then turn their surplus networking equipment into cash by buying it from them," he explained. "We add value to their business because we are technically knowledgeable. We can review their IT needs and if there is something they have forgotten, we will advise them of it.
"But we will also tell them if there is a less expensive way to go about something," Lakatos said.
Warwick also now provide short-term rentals for equipment if a company needs equipment for a specific project or is not staying in a given area, and it can auction equipment on a high tech auction web site.
The market for used networking equipment is growing and manufacturers are beginning to accept that used equipment vendors as part of the marketplace. Recent articles in major publications have brought increased attention to the secondary equipment market.
Refurbished equipment is inspected, tested and guaranteed. It is made to look as close to new as possible and all the accessories that would be on new equipment are included.
The closing of large companies, such as Enron or WorldCom, affects the market for used equipment because large amounts of routers, switches and servers are suddenly available. That availability “has helped change some of the mindset against buying used equipment”, Lakatos said. As other companies tighten their belts and budgets are reduced, used equipment becomes a more logical choice and managers want to reclaim some of the investment in the old equipment they have that no longer meets the company's needs.
"Company managers may not think of the possibility of buying used equipment until someone points it out to them," Lakatos said. "Then, when they realize how much they can save on used equipment that is guaranteed, it seems like the obvious way to go."
